Galois theory and fields of power series

Abstract:
One of the main driving forces in Galois theory is the inverse Galois problem: Is every finite group a Galois group over the field of rational numbers? This question, though more than a century old, is still open. In this talk I will explain some of the questions and concepts of modern Galois theory, in particular the role of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem, Pop's result on ample fields, and the solvability of finite split embedding problems. Then I will present related results from joint work with Elad Paran, concerning fields of power series.
